On Oct 8th, 2024 at the University of Kassel, Dr. Thi Thu Giang Luu from the HortiBonn team attended and presented NIFAM’s recent works on "Navigating Complexity: Holistic Decision-Making in Agri-Food System Transition".
The NIFAM project explores how decision-making can drive sustainable transitions in agri-food systems by addressing complex, real-world challenges. Using a system dynamics approach, our research mapped the evolution of the food systems in Hanoi, Vietnam, identifying key drivers and barriers to sustainability transitions. This mapping enabled us to identify decisions and potential intervention points within the complex food system. We also present the use of Holistic Decision Analysis—a transdisciplinary method that offers evidence-based yet pragmatic support for decisions made under uncertainty and incomplete information. Through this approach, we examine how decisions influence long-term outcomes and entail trade-offs across social, economic, and ecological domains.
The workshop was organized at the University of Kassel (Germany), 07-09 October 2024, under the auspices of the Agro-Food Thematic Group of the Sustainability Transitions Research Network (STRN).
